Transmeta in the news

Shugashack has 3 links to articles talking about Transmeta's "Crusoe" CPU that will soon be released. Is it a new competitor in the PC market? Will Intel and AMD have to be afraid? Why is all the fuzz about that chip? Read on...

CHIP tests high-end Systems

Chip a major German Computer magazine has tested some high end CPUs. Among a P3 700, an Athlon 750 and a Kryo Athlon 1GHz was also the POwerMac G4 450 from Apple. Tests were performed in Filemaker, Quake 3, PkZip, MP3 encoders and 2D and 3D rendering programms and of course Photoshop 5.5. The Kryo Athlon won most tests, only Photoshop seems to be a weakness of both Athlons (no 3Dnow! support obviously). The G4 lost almost all tests, especially the Quake 3 one (no wonder though, the PCs had GeForces) Even in Photoshop the G4 was beaten by the Pentium 700, but according to chip, it excelled all test machines in the Altivec enabled filters (2 out of 5 tested). Then there was also some whining about the "Tank" spot from Apple. PC geeks seem to be very excited by the "Supercomputer" tag on the G4. They always get all fuzzy when some PC with twice the MHz beats the G4. "It is no Supercomputer at all, Apple is cheating blablabla". And then they also mentioned that File encryption was terribly slow on the G4, so they tested it with DropStuff yet (instead of the totally exotic PkZip). There the Mac was faster, but still about 3 times slower than the slowest PC. I wonder if they even had an expander enhancer installed...I doubt it. And my favorite was their conclusion: "Performance can't be the reason to buy a G4, but it has other pros: Its beautiful and the case is really well designed"....I'm so sick of this, if only Apple had waited with bragging until everything was enabled for Altivec...

P3 mobile finally shipping?

the register claims that Intel is now finally going to release the P3 mobile chips. But 750$ just for the slowest chip isn't really low-cost either. Not to forget that these chips are being slowed don in mobile mode (to save energy), so actually you only get a 633MHz desktop for that price... Whoopass:)

Do I need ads?

MacObserver claims to know that you NEED advertisement on your page in oder to make it good and popular. Well I know this is not exactly popular (poor ignorants not knowing about this) and it's not beautiful either. But hey, I don't need banners, if you want me to post some, please, you just have to send them. Each update costs me around 1.50$ and I don't get any money back, but hey, after all it is fun. Why always think profits...

3Dfx' plans

MacCentral has again wrapped up what 3Dfx will be bringing to the Mac later this year. What exactly will the support be like? If you are still asking that question, you should read it now, once and for all.

MGL has just recruited my former buddy at IMG Ryan S. Adams. Of course he is still a bud, but he works for the competition now };-))

Finder and Sherlock merge?

MOSR rumors that Mac OS X will merge the Finder with Sherlock, combining their functionality in but one window. I guess we'll hear more of that until it finally comes out.
