G4 500 yields dropping below zero

the register as well as AppleInsider note that Motorola is still struggling with G4 chips to reach satisfactory production yields. At the moment they are as low as 1 lousy percent, which of course increases production cost a lot and also reduces the number of ready chips a lot. The 500MHz barrier, that prevented previous chips from running faster than 450Mhz, seems to be no hurdle anymore, obviously the bug in the Level 1 data cache has been fixed. However, what is causing the great trouble, seems to be the architecture of the G4 paired with Motorola's copper fabrication process. Also IBM is now likely to wait for the G4e, which will hopefully fix those issues too. Yeah, not only Intel is screwing things up dudes...buy a G4 now or wait for the G4e, like I will.

Intel reacts

the register also notes that Intel has bought a fabrication plant from Rockwell International to increase their production capacity in order to get more Coppermines out of the door.
