Quake 3 scores
xlr8yourmac has gotten some reader report on Quake 3 performance using both Mac OS X and 9.1, testing all 3 major graphics cards (Radeon, GeForce 2MX and GeForce 3) and getting some amazing speeds under Mac OS X with heavy tweaking...250+ FPS..argh.
Bye bye Cube, it seems
the register thinks (and is most certainly right at least for this revision of the machine) that Apple is going to can the PowerMac G4 Cube and is discontinuing any further production of the unit. The world simply wasn't ready for this machine, nor was the machine for the world.
MP3 Pro released
the register notes that the successor format to MP3 was released today and is certainly going to get some programmers annoyed, because they'll have to rewrite their apps to work with the new format which is supposed to use half the disk space of normal MP3s, yet have better quality.
VIA still working on the sons of Cyrix
the register notes that the latest development in the now already old family of "Cyrix" chips, the C4 will hit 2GHz in the second half of 2002. Adding more pipeline depth and SIMD instructions, VIA probably hopes to get a chip not only with a small price tag, but also one that people might actually want to buy, because it can more or less keep up with the competition, performance wise.
MOSR has some more rumors on future products from Apple. Always interesting hints there.
