Xbox troubles explained

Shacknews has gotten some explanation on why the Xboxes in various showcases had serious software problems. Guess what? Yeah, whenever Microsoft has to do something about software, there will be someone to goof it up. They aparently built the demo titles with an old video library that would conflict with the new hardware or vice versa. For you that means that Xbox might actually crash less than 50 times a day, once you can buy it, and for MS it means an employee less.

Various

xlr8yourmac.com has some tinkering reader reports (a G4 Tower with 10HDs inside (more than my tinkering with the Beige G3 case, where I said 9 would be possible, on the other hand those 9 would fit in more or less correctly mounted, not like the example here). The rest isn't really worth commenting, see for yourself.

Interesting stuff

FiringSquad both takes a look at ATI's latest attempt of optimizing its drivers (for the Radeon 8500) for Quake 3 to give it an advantage over other cards in benchmarks (since Q3 is surely the most used game for benchmarking), some people feel (and I agree) that this is a violation of benchmarking ethics. See for yourself.
They also have a review of and some tips for Windows XP. What do they think about it? at MacNN the note that some reviewer aparently said that now was the best time to buy a Mac. He seems to think that if you already have to switch, then you should choose Mac OS X and not XP. Well, they look the same anyway:)

More ATI news

the register notes that apart from trying to cheat the word into believing that their cards are faster than they are, ATI has now also released an LE version of the Radeon 8500, running at 250MHz instead of 275. Most certainly the LE is equipped with chips that didn't want to work at 275MHz, as seen with Intel's Celeron CPUs.

iPod discussed

MacCentral has been talking to the Apple Product manager Greg Joswiak, who in turn told them a bit about the iPod. If you're interested in what he had to say, head over and read it yourself.

MG again has some news on gaming, the most important bit being that a beta of Oni for OS X has been arrived.
