G5 rumors, hints and speculation beyond any reason

Several sites have news and speculation on the upcoming G5 PowerMacs, or G4 PowerMacs. Currently rumors range from simply speed bumped G4s at 733, 933 and dual 1000MHz to 1.6GHz G5 machines with brand new ase and motherboard. 3.5GHz P4 is real

Slashdot among other sites has news on a Japanese freak who overclocked a 2GHz Northwood P4 to an incredible 3.5GHz, using a liquid nitrogen cooling system. Amazing...but you start to ask yourself: what is all that performance actually good for?

MS kills more OpenGL

the register reports that Microsoft has bought s rather large portfolio of patents from SGI for more than 62 million dollars. Experts see the move more as another attempt to dampen the support for OpenGL by hardware manufacturers to eventually kill OpenGL in favor of DirectX (which exists only on Windows, while OpenGL exists on almost every important platform), than using the patents to improve their own products, ie incorporate some ideas into Direct3D.

Finances

MacNN has a report on Apple's Financial report from Wednesday. They made quite some dough again ($38 mio) and are healthy. However there were also some slight hints at upcoming new hardware throughout the year.
