Apple updates PowerBook, introduces eMac

Apple Computer today released an updated line of PowerBooks G4. The three new models have 667 or 800MHz G4 chips, 1MB of L3 cache, 133MHz system bus, 256-1024MB RAM, 30-60GB HD, Combo Drives, ATI Mobility Radeon 7500 graphics chips with 32MB DDR RAM, Gigabit Ethernet, 56K modem, 2x USB 1x FireWire, and come with an AirPort card preinstalled on the 800MHz models. They also come with a DVI video-out port and an enhanced 15.2" screen with 1280x854 pixels resolution and an audio-in minijack connector (it's back, hurray). However, the infrared port is gone. Prices are 2499$-3199$-3799$, thus a tad pricey, probably to keep request down until things are available in volume, I'd expect a pricedrop around MWNY. More on that thing here
Also interesting is the new eMac (e as in education). It's basically the long fabled 17" CRT iMac, with a brand new, very nice looking case, and the specs of a normal 700MHz iMac G4. However it has 3 USB ports and a audio-in jack too, very nice (I think they finally understood that the audio-in jack is vital for many people out there, even if it's only 16bit) All together a very nice machine, if it's going to be sold at the right price, aparently, from what i gather, the price is starting at 999$ for now. Have a look here.
Last but not least there's now also another bunch of Pro softwre available for Mac OS X (Flash MX for example) and Apple now also offers their own DVI to ADC adaptor.
xlr8yourmac.com has soe more details from the tech department, while the register reports on the eMac and on the PowerBook G4.

Microsoft vs Nintendo?

Slashdot notes that a new book that has been released describes how Microsoft wanted to buy out Nintendo for $25 billion back in 1999 and failed. Have a look.

Another new "Mac"

This guy converted an old Macintosh SE into a PC, running Linux and a Mac OS theme. Nice work. Don't worry, the SE was broken.

MOSR

MOSR was bang on time, and they hit the thing precisely. Their PowerBook rumors were totally accurate for a change. Probably see the archives there. Also they have some new rumors on upcoming PowerMacs, and Mac OS X 10.2. Always a good read, even with a grain of salt. After all AppleInsider is only a forum anymore.
See also Geek.com's thoughts about the G5 chip. They're not sure whether it will ever ship either.

New IBM chips ahead

News.com has new on IBM's plans for POWER5 and POWER6 chips, with some revolutionary new design ideas. However nothing is expected to ship before 2004, so that's quite a while off. Also, teh POWER series of chips are traditionally for server use only, but that doesn't mean its design won't influence other chips/chipmakers either.

nVidia in the US army

FiringSquad has an interesting article on how modern graphics GPUs are being used for military purposes. I don't want to go into details here, before I read it myself, but I think that's an interesting story.
