Another Mac-killing benchmark
digitalvideoediting.com has recently posted another benchmark comparing Macs vs PCs. Think of those cross-platfrom benchmarks whatever you want, but this one looks rather bad, no matter how you turn it.
xlr8yourmac has notes on the latest OS X security update, including the trojaned OpenSSH fix an d various other news, as usual. Nothing ground breaking though.
Radeon 9000 Pro Review
FS has a review of the recently released Radeon 9000 Pro card, which is soon going to be followed by the also announced Radeon 9700 (the R300), which is the card Doom3 was demoed on.
Analyst escapes asylum again
News.com has word from Bear Stearns analyst Andre Neff that Apple is going to switch to Intel CPUs within the next 2-4 years. Now of course everyone is titling "Apple to move to x86". That is not going to happen. If Apple is going to switch to another platform than the PPC, then it's going to be something new, like IA-64 or whatever, but certainly not x86. And the "evidence" that Apple owns shares at Intel and is unhappy with Motorola isn't hard enough for me to dig this just yet. We've seen roughly one billion of analysts predict things "for sure", and yet, they all failed. Don't forget Intel is not only the world's biggest CPU supplier, it's also the company behind PCI, USB and a lot of other technologies, that are already part of a Mac's internals, and have been for decades.
iMac prices drop
the register reports that Apple has dropped iMac prices in the UK by 100, resp. 50£.
Apple unveils Quartz Extreme tech
the register also notes that Apple has released some specs and a shader language for Quartz Extreme, one of the most anticipated features of the upcoming Mac OS X 10.2 (Jaguar) release, slated currently for August 24. Looks like future UI graphics might improve a lot.
The news in games
MG has a preview of EverQuest (which is coming for the Mac, dunno if I mentioned that already) and has various scoops on upcoming titles and past events (namely MWNY).
IMG has other news, like a slight delay on Soldier of Fortune 2 for the Mac, due to an update on the PC side, Quake 3 getting another point release, and Doom 3 running on Mac OS X Jaguar.
MOSR has some funny rumors and facts about Jaguar and the upcoming new PowerMacs, which are currently expected either on August 13. or 24., but unfortunately nobody really knows which one.
AppleInsider has even more rumors. Really entertaining forum there.
Random Apple news
Slashdot has a lot of interesting newsbits of the past few days. A good source to catch up for both you and me. (Shame on me for not posting for 3 weeks, but it's been holidays (and still is, btw)).
TomsHardware is always a good source for hardware news and information. Some meaty bits about the NV30 too.
